Heavy Duty Trailer Tires
Peter looked for a trailer with heavy duty trailer tires with which he could tow the his single engine plane that he had spent a year building. He said he wanted to be sure that there was never a break down when he was transporting the plane. At least that's the story he was telling everyone that he was talking to. A plane is light and doesn't need a trailer with special tires with a high load rating and a high speed rating. As long as the tires are mounted and balanced correctly, and filled with the correct inflation pressure, the trailer would be in no danger of breaking down with a blown out tire unless the tread depth had been allowed to become to shallow. Yes, a worn out tire could be a problem, but that didn't matter. Peter wasn't really looking for a trailer for his plane. It was 25 years ago that Peter was working as a journalist in Central America, covering the Nicaragua civil war. He had been in talking with the Sandinistas, when he was contacted by the CIA. Ever since, he had worked as a special agent, carrying out special missions that were too sensitive to be handled by the regular army special forces. Now, he had to put on a front that he needed a trailer with trailer tires that would withstand heavy loads. The warranty wasn't at issue, as the government could well afford to replace any tires that failed. But failure wasn't an option. That's why they had to be constructed of high quality rubber with heavy sidewalls. Double steel belted was specified by his supervisor to with stand potential punctures by sharp objects. He was expecting driving conditions to be good on the day he picked up the trailer and drove to the pickup point. Checking the inflation pressure was a no-brainer, and the salesman offered to rotate the tires. But Peter saw the tread wear was good and declined. The man hooked up the trailer to his SUV, and made sure the safety chains were properly connected and that the lights worked. Peter pulled out of the sales service center with the trailer in tow.
